One of the most troublesome areas of the roof is the Eave to Rake Wall Flashing intersection. However, the problems in this area can be greatly reduced if some guidelines are followed. Before installing any roofing material, make sure that others before you have correctly completed their job with the Fascia Trim Board and Roof Decking intersection.

This intersection should look as sketched above. It can be equal to the thickness of the Exterior Wall Covering or slightly less but never thicker than the Exterior Wall Covering. This is too short for even the minimum roof flashing height of 4" up the wall that is required by some roofing materials. See Eave Roofing Material Installation web page.

Shown is a two ply Underlayment installation which means that it is applied shingle fashion. Example: a 36" wide underlayment is lapped 19" to obtain a true 2 ply installation. By the way, the Underlayment can be installed anytime, even after the placement of the Through the Wall Z Bar Flashing. It also serves as the counter flashing of the roof to wall flashing that will extend into the gutter. Setting it down directly on the Through the Wall Z Bar will block the weep holes.

Now any moisture that gets in behind the Exterior Wall Covering will drain down the wall House Wrap onto the Through the Wall Z Bar Flashing and onto the roof surface once the roof flashing and roofing material is installed.

Roof drip edge flashing serves multiple functions on a building, the foremost of which is to assist water in leaving the roof edge with minimum damage to other building components by directing the water off of the roof and into the gutter.

Without this detail water leaving the roof edge wants to run down building fascias, soffits, and walls, sometimes even entering and damaging the structure.

The drip edge also gives us a nice straight edge with which to align roof shingles, slates or other roofing material. Drip edge varies in dimensions but typically the flange that nails to the roof surface is about 2. Usually you won't see much of drip edge as it's under the roof shingles, under the underlayment, and behind the roof gutter. If there is a gutter, water leaving the lower roof edge is directed into the gutter, not behind it, not down building walls, not where we don't want it to go.

Guide to Drip Edges for Shingle Roofs

Most of the roof runoff is going off the roof not down the fascia board. Our illustration above shows proper placement of the roof drip edge atop the roof sheathing - before installation of roofing felt or ice and water shield and spaced a bit away from the fascia board to improve its drainage. Some roofing manufacturers such as IKO suggest installing a furring strip to make sure that the drip edge is spaced well out from the fascia.

If using a Type C drip edge, you can install a furring strip to increase its performance. IKO In the sketch above the furring strip is shown in blue. The gutter not shown will be secured to the fascia board yellow with the gutter high-end up tight against the under-side of the furring strip.

On your gable ends, driving winds can force moisture sideways under your shingles, which creates a similar end result; rotting wood.

Installing an appropriate drip edge often saves hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars when your roof system needs to be replaced.
